We dealt with (most of) the speech of Mr. Obama and now it is your turn. You have worked your way through the task sheets (SiZ – solution key inside) which should provide some help on how it is done. When you write your own speech now, use stylistic devices to make your speech more appealing. You get to choose from these two possible contexts:

a) You are Mustapha Mond. Prepare a speech in which you present the system of the BNW as the perfect system. Think about the situation in which you are holding this speech as well as who is your audience. It could be in front of a committee before the BNW to convince them to create the BNW, it could be on the Falklands or in Iceland in front of those outsiders in an attempt to convince them to join forces with the government – and maybe get someone like Helmholtz to become a controller, it could also be in front of a group of Alphas to reensure their belief in the system.

b) You are John the Savage. Pepare a speech in which you present your doubts of the system of BNW, in which you strongly argue against it. Remember that John would use a specific set of values as well as language.

Speeches are to be delivered on TUE!

Hello folks,

my doctor decided to give me a sick note, therefore, unfortunatelly, I won’t be there when you write your pre-A-level exams… But I’ll think of you and keep my fingers crossed! :-) I’m sure you’ll do your very best. Just concentrate on the task, read the text carefully and don’t forget to reread your answers before you hand in your exams.

Don’t panic and “May the force be with you!” ;-)

Cheers,

K. Münch

The Reservation

Focus on chapters 6, 7 and 8 again with the help of the following tasks:

1. Describe what you learn about the Reservation. How does it differ from the society that has been depicted up to now? It might be helpful to draw a table comparing the Reservation to the World State under the aspects of sights, sounds, smells and people’s appearances.

2. Give reasons why such a place is allowed to exist in a world that is otherwise happy.

3. Give a brief summary of what Linda says in chapter 6. What impression do you gain of her?

4. Analyse Linda’s position within the pueblo, taking into account her different view of morality.

See you on WED, cheers,

Hi folks,

unfortunately, I have to call in sick… Nonetheless, please finish the worksheeds (in case you haven’t yet ;-) ) and take notes on “hypnopaedia” (especially end of ch. 2, also interesting in comparison to end of ch. 3!). Be prepared to explain how hypnopaedia works and in which areas – according to the novel – in can be successful and in which areas it rather can’t.

Take care,

see you on FR,

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Hello folks,

I definitely do not want to spoil your holidays, therefore consider this to be a friendly and short reminder of what is really important ;-)

You need to buy this book: Brave New World by A. Huxley. We will work with the Cornelsen edition, so this is the ISBN 978-3-06-031163-7.

Make sure you have read the book by the beginning of the new term!

Enjoy your summer vacation,

cheers, K. Münch

1) While you watch the documentary

- take notes on Gandhi’s aims and

- on how many of them have been fulfilled in present-day India.

2) Do some research on the so-called modern India (politics, economy, population, etc.). These sites and pages might be of interest:

3) Comment on the term “modern India” taking into consideration what has been said in the documentary and what you have found out about India.
